The people were all lined up in the square, and the soldiers who were standing up on the balconies or lying on the roofs of the buildings fired their guns. They shot everyone in the square. Nobody could escape because the army put tanks at either end of the square so nobody could run away."

Another Szasz work (we're fans here, in case you didn't catch that). This second novel takes us to some kind of war time orphanage, and all the hideous realities one can imagine within. A highlight of her bibliography, which maintains the intensity of the prose while weaving a cogent tale of battlefield depravity.
