[Graphic Novel History] [Original] [Woodcut]

Wild Pilgrimage

Lynd Ward

Harrison, Smith and Robert Haas, NY. 1932. First edition. This true first edition of Lynd Ward's masterpiece includes the original dust jacket, now wrapped in clear mylar to protect it. Some small dings to the edges of the dust jacket. Rust colored boards are beautifully pristine.  The interior is yellowing as expected, though the illustrations remain shockingly vivid. Prior owners name plate and book store plate are affixed to inner front pages. Binding is tight an intact. An excellent, display worthy copy.

From the publisher:

"Ward is known for his wordless novels told entirely through dramatic woodcuts. His work includes an awareness of the racial injustice to be found in the United States. This is first apparent in the lynching scenes from this title. Ward studied at Columbia University and the State Academy for Graphics Arts, Leipzig, Germany, where he studied wood engraving with Hans Mueller. Bold and vibrant woodcuts in crisp blacks and reds throughout."

It is a true honor to offer this first edition of Lynd Ward's masterpiece "Wild Pilgrimage." Ward is known for their "graphic novels", told entirely through wordless woodblock prints. The quality of said prints is shockingly beautiful. As you turn page by page a powerful narrative of man versus industry takes shape; the rust colored prints representing our protagonists inner world, the coal black prints representing the rotten world of industry encroaching on him. I was shaking when I found this and even now I'm excited to even be able to offer to you.For true connoisseurs of graphic storytelling culture. Highest possible recommendation.
