Video Culture: A Critical Investigation

Ed. John Hanhardt

Visual Studies Workshop Press, 1986. NY. First edition paperback. Some chipping to the spine and edges of the cover; some soiling to the text block. Charmingly written notes penciled in throughout. A well loved copy in very good condition.

From the publisher:

"Video Culture brings together a wide range of critical, theoretical, and historical essays on film, video and television. The essays address issues pertaining to art and technology and taken together define a "video culture" as it is determined by the distinctive features of the medium and the forces acting on it's history."

this is an excellent, and quite prescient, series of essays related primarily to video art, but also to a burgeoning "video culture" as the medium of expressive culture of the late 80s. Contributors include (but are not limited to) Walter Benjamin, Bertolt Brecht, Jack Burnham, David Ross, Nam June Paik and a great introductory essay by John Hanhardt, former head of the Whitney's Film and Video Department. The bibliography included is also an invaluable resource for those diving into "video culture." Recommended.
