The Night Country
Loren Eiseley
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York. 1971.First edition, first printing. Corner clipped dust jacket. Some dings and rubbing to dust jacket. Some minor soiling to top edge of text block.
No this has nothing to do with True Detective: Night Country. Unless maybe the writer saw this book, said "The Night Country" is a good name, then ran with it. We will never know. Instead, you get a very stylish late-in-life memoir from a real deal anthropologist. A fascinating dive into a person's worldview late in their life, with a hard focus on mortality both enthralling and repellent. Heavy. check out this line:
"In the waste fields strung with barbed wire where the thistles grow over hidden mine fields there exists a curious freedom."
I wonder if him and McCarthy were buds? Seems likely. Maybe. Maybe not.
Protip: take off the dust jacket and reveal the dope metallic blue and green hardback.
