Highest recommendation here - The Last Western is an incredible, sprawling dystopia sci fi epic that begins with a multiracial baseballer player from Truth or Consequences ascending to the Papal Throne. A masterpiece in a simiilar vein to books like A Canticle for Liebowitz, or even more closely, The Alteration by Kingsley Amis. Extremely scarce these days.
