The Diamond People

Murray Schumach

Norton, NY. 1981. First edition hardcover. Some soiling of the dust jacket, corners clipped on front flap and some tears along edges; staining to text block. A very good copy.

From the publisher:

"This book is a novel, written by an insider, about the 47th Street area in Manhattan which is the center of the nation's multi-billion dollar diamond industry. Behind this diamond curtain lies a strange and chaotic world dominated by immigrant Jews, many of whom are survivors of the Holocaust, and their sons. Among the dealers, retailers, and manufacturers competition is fierce, often cut-throat. And yet the entire system operates on a simple, strict code of a man's word is his bond. Millions of dollars' worth of stones may pass on consignment from one dealer to another with nothing to record the transaction but a handshake."

I'll vouch for this one - it's like Uncut Gems in the 70s. Ultimately it's very cool, inside baseball on the NY diamond district. What an insane world that is...and virtually undocumented, except here!
