Alone Against Tomorrow
Harlan Ellison
The MacMillan Company, New York, 1971. Book Club Edition. Octavo.
Beautiful condition. A very fine copy with two small tears to the cover, chipping on the spine. Text and boards are immaculate.
This book is worth it for the nightmare AI horror of the opening story, “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream”, without a doubt one of the greatest short story titles, period. Following this, we move through twenty masterful science fiction tales, including the work “Repent, Harlequin! Said the Ticktockman”, which Alan Moore has cited as an inspiration for “V for Vendetta”. While I wouldn’t go so far as to say Ellison was “before his time”, his particular brand of moody, invective science fiction is perfectly attuned to the present moment. A classic.
